| The monument at Vitkov park commemorates the battle of Vitkow, in which Jan Zizka and the Hussite army defeated the larger forces of Bohemian King and Roman Emperor Sigismund. This heroic battle took place in 1420. There are sporadic guided tours to the monument, and the statue of Zizka himself. The park at the top of the Vítkov mountain occupies an area of 32 hectares. The mountain used to be covered with dense forests, and under the rule of Emperor Charles IV, vineyards were established on the slopes. It was Prague Counsel Vítek from Hora, owner of some of these vineyards, who gave the mountain its name. At the end of 19th century, Mr František Thomayer obtained authorisation to turn the western plain of the mountain into a city park. |
